Hall 21

This hall contains a varied collection of daily life utensils and some items pertaining to the other life. Some are Greek drinking pots, burial urns of El Hadra found in graveyards east and west of the city. However, the most important items on display are some oil lamps and their handles that date back to the 4th century BC till the Byzantine era. Previously oil lamps were imported from outside Egypt from countries of the Mediterranean especially from Greece and Rome. However, the old city of Alexandria was famous for its oil lamps factories, primarily the factory called "Fortis & Strabelli". Alexandria's streets were lit at night like any other big capital of the world; something to be considered rare at the time and most likely never took place in other Greek and Roman cities.
