Egypt has known the textile industry since long, and the historical sources state that the preferred material used originally was the linen. They used it in their coffin making and avoided woolen textiles due to religious believes. The old Egyptian tombs were the main source of textile, while the Roman era witnesses the use of woolen textiles.
The Coptic weaving of textiles has reached an excellent level of perfection that it became one of the main Egyptian exports to the world during that era. Tapestry making was synonymous to Coptic artists even by the time the Islamic era has arrived. The tapestry centers of manufacturing were situated in Upper Egypt, particularly in Bahansa, Fayoum, Antonioy and Akhmim. Beautiful pieces were found in tombs of these areas with colorful designs, and superb articulation of human figures, animal and plant formations, in addition to the favorite topics of Greek and Roman legends, like crosses, fishes, birds and lambs. Scenes of angels and saints were also found inside the Christian tombs.
