The sacred animals were known at the late period of the Egyptian civilization. The crocodile was one of the animals generally admired by the Egyptian due to its link with the river Nile. Its cycle of life that was connected with the blessed Nile seasonal floods. Lake Qaroon in Fayoum was a huge water reservoir providing prosperity to Egyptians and a natural habitat to crocodiles, which was reflected on the beliefs affiliated to the nature of Egypt.

During the Ptolemaic era, the oasis of Fayoum blossomed with fertile plantation that attracted both the Ptolemaic and Romans. This made a lot of Greek worship the old Egyptian gods and the old Egyptian temples thrived around the lake Qaroon.

During the Roman era, the historian Strabo told us about the sacred crocodile domesticated by Suchus and the priests of Aristoy district.
